Our Employees

Kirwan Conservation acknowledges the importance of our employees and believes in attracting, retaining and nurturing the best craftspeople. Our company has a varied demographic with experienced masons with over forty years’ experience right down to first year apprentices.

We are firm believers in lifelong learning, our varied demographic allows for on the job training and knowledge transfer. We have in recent years invested significantly in masonry and lime based training. We have developed our own in-house training programme on lime mortars in conjunction with former head of training at English Heritage have delivered on site training.

Our employees have attended West Dean College for specific masonry conservation training in an effort to improve or work practices and be the best at what we do. All our employees have current Safe Pass, manual handling, Abrasive wheel training and Garda clearance.

Joe Kirwan Snr

Joe Snr has been involved in the construction industry for over forty years predominately working with Historic houses, Churches and Banks. He is on hand to offer advice to the company and its employees. He has a keen interest in traditional materials and vernacular houses. He was an early advocate of lime in the use of building and in the late nineties started using natural hydraulic lime in buildings. He takes particular interest in weathering of buildings and how to improve on previous poor repairs.

John Kirwan

John has always had an interest in historic buildings for an early age attending along with his brother Joe attended to his father and team during school holidays. John Apprenticed to the late Jimmy Kehoe, he is an experienced Stone mason and has a particular interested in our built heritage. He established the company and is responsible for the monitoring and completion of projects on site. He is also responsible for the financial management of the company. John is very interested in the development of hot lime mortars. He has trialed and used different mixes. He is passionate about the principles of like for like repair and traditional methods. He is keen to promote hot mixed mortars and more lime in building.

Joe T Kirwan

Joe T Kirwan. Joe completed a B.Sc. Construction Management & Engineering in Waterford Institute of Technology in 2000 with first class honours. He completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Applied Building Repair and Conservation in Trinity College Dublin. He has also completed CIF training in IOSH MISC and PSCS and Building Master Classes (BCM) in West Dean College. He has worked for several main contractors initially as a site engineer to Site Manager/Project Manager. During this time he worked on many projects with protected structures forming part of larger developments and many private protected homes.

Joe is responsible for new business, tendering, and pre-commencement planning and on site quality and health and safety. Joe has a particular interest in Building Pathology, Building Physics and how modern interventions and modern lifestyles interact with the historic fabric of buildings.

Eric Osborne

Eric Osborne RIBA ARB works a consultant to us. He provides preliminary surveys for budget estimates on projects. His office also provides detailed survey drawings and generates shop drawings and cutting lists for dimensioned stone where required.
